December 1, 1938 ~ April 9, 2025

Born in: Lagrange, GA
Resided in: Asheville, NC

On April 9, 2025, Joseph Freeman Moore, (known as “Poppy” to his grandchildren) left this earthly world to sit beside
the throne and the hand of God. Joe was born in Lagrange, GA on December 1, 1938, to Richard and Mary Moore.

Joe (Poppy) spent 20 years of his life serving in the US Army with 3 years active duty and 17 years in the Reserves, retiring at a rank of Sergeant First Class. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia with a degree in Forestry. Joe began his career as a Forester, before becoming a real estate appraiser and dedicating 37 years to US Forest Service. Later in life, he founded CDN Appraisal, Inc. with two of his sons. He was an instructor for several years at AB Tech, teaching others to become appraisers. Joe was a faithful member of Beverly Hills Baptist Church.

All that knew Joe (Poppy) knew he was a phone call or a truck ride away to help with anything that someone needed.
Joe was passionate about reading, constantly learning, his grand dogs, Wednesday retiree breakfast with his
brothers and sisters in arms. He was most passionate about his wife, boys, daughters-in-law (who he always said
were his daughters), and five grandchildren. Joe’s proudest achievement on this earth was finding his soulmate,
Laverne, and spending 63½ years together raising their boys, while walking hand and hand tackling any of life’s
challenges together.

Joe moved to Asheville, NC in 1975 with his wife Laverne, and three sons, Jeff, Mark, and Mike and lived in the Haw
Creek community until his passing. Joe is survived by his wife, Laverne Moore, his three boys and their wives, Jeff
and Allison Moore (Newark, DE), Mark and Kerry Moore (Cumming, GA) and Mike and Sara Moore (Asheville, NC). His five grandchildren, Natalie Sawyer Moore and her fiancée Devon Conti, Delaney Kay Moore, Cassie Leigh Moore, William Joseph Moore, and Cameron James Moore. He is also survived by his brother Rick Moore, his nieces, nephews, their children, his church family and countless other friends.

The family will hold a celebration of life on Monday April 14th at Beverly Hills Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 PM with a service starting at 2:00 PM.

The family would like to express our sincere gratitude and thank you to Joe’s home health caregivers, his VA doctors and nurses and other staff members for the care and love that they provided to Joe over the last several years (we can never thank you enough). We would also like to thank the Solace Hospice Center for the love and care they provided Joe in his final hours of life.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to a veteran’s organization, Care Partners Solace Hospice Center, or donate time or
money to help someone affected by Hurricane Helene.

"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither what is high nor what is low nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.": (Romans 8:38-39)

Rest peacefully Poppy; we are looking forward to being beside you again.

At annual training, if I had an issue with specific training, Joe was always there to help as well as anyone else that needed help. Rest in peace now and no more pain and suffering which there is none in heaven

  3. I am very sorry for your loss. SFC Moore was an excellent Soldier and a great mentor.
I remember him well. It was an honor to serve with him in the 108th.

  4. Deepest sympathies to Laverne and the entire Moore clan. Papa Joe was a great man that will be sorely missed. The Ingle family grieves with our extended family.

  5. I was saddened to hear of Joe’s passing. “Jo Mo” was a close co-worker with me at the US Forest Service. We shared stories from the Univ. of Georgia as we both were graduates of the Warnell School of Forest Resources there. We will keep his family in our thoughts and prayers.
