Norman Calloway

norman calloway

Charles “Norman” Calloway, 87, passed comfortably into the arms of the Lord on Friday March 28, 2025, at 12:17 a.m. at the Elizabeth House in Hendersonville, NC. He was a native of the Asheville area and son of the late James Calloway and Flora Warren Calloway, of Asheville.

Norman is survived by his wife, Patricia Ann Calloway; their three children: Michael Calloway, Renée Bryan, and Tyla Fox and their respective spouses; along with eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Kay Huff, and cousin, Roy Warren and his wife, of Asheville.

Norman (or papaw to those who loved him dearly) was an upbeat, sentimental family man who loved the Lord, loved his animals, was always whistling or singing songs of the 40s and 50s era, and watching gunslinger movies. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1955 to 1963 and was a member of the Marine Air Wing, going by the nickname “Stormin’ Norman,” given to him by his fellow marines. As an airplane mechanic and an award winning marksman, he enjoyed traveling to nine different countries during his time in the military.

He later settled down in Arden with his wife Pat to raise his family. He worked the swing shift for Ball Corporation for 33 years until it’s closing in 1994. He lived a simple life, gave simple advice, loved to laugh, and was an amusing jokester. He was a loyal, loving man and will be greatly missed, but those who love him know that heaven is rejoicing. God bless you, good and faithful servant. We love you, Papaw!

His family will receive friends beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2, at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home, with military honors. Pastor Michael Brown will officiate. Burial will be held at Snow Hill United Methodist Church cemetery.
