April 11, 1955 ~ October 21, 2024

Born in: Brattleboro, Vermont
Resided in: Flat Rock, NC

Michael Stephen Garland from Flat Rock, NC, went to be with the Lord on Monday, October 21, 2024, after a long and very courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Brattleboro, Vermont, on April 11, 1955, to David and Mary (Monette) Garland. He graduated from Hinsdale High School in Hinsdale, NH, in 1973.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Hannah (Hunter) Garland. He is survived by his daughter, Mary (Alex) Wilson, and his two granddaughters, Elise and Elizabeth, his brothers, Christopher (Chip) Garland and Matt (Jody) Garland, his sister, Melinda Buteau, as well as his nieces, nephews, great nieces and a nephew.

He graduated from the University of Rochester with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He continued to work as an engineer until he retired from Tyco Electronics in 2023.

Mike was passionate about giving back and volunteering his time to help others in need. He found joy in spending his time helping Habitat for Humanity. He also spent countless hours volunteering with his church family to assist flood victims and others in need by helping build homes and making the community better. He was an active NC Baptists on Mission member, which helped him spread the good Lord’s love by helping others in need. His strong faith carried him throughout his entire life, and it was instrumental in his positive outlook while battling cancer. He was highly involved with his church family, Biltmore Church in Asheville.

His other passions in life included hiking, running, biking locally and abroad, and backpacking the Appalachian Trail. He enjoyed God’s outside creation and found it gave him much peace. He found great joy in riding with his friends in the Kirbo Cycling Group. When he couldn’t keep up with his fellow bikers, he committed to riding his Peloton so he would be with them in spirit. He never let the cancer stop him from spending his time outside and enjoying his life. He fought a tough fight until the end, never giving up on life.

Services will be held on Monday, October 28, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian in Arden and will be streamed live via the link just below the obit text.

Mike prioritized finding joy in life and sharing it with others. The family asks you to do the same: do something that brings you joy outside and share it with those around you.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I will miss you Mike so very much. You were such an inspiration to many but to me, you were a close friend. You brought me joy, peace and taught me something about forgiveness. We hiked and fished together and while you seemed quiet, you had an amazing personality full of fun and laughter. You loved the Lord, the outdoors, your family and an incredible devoted friend to many. You helped others always but was a bit stubborn when it came to asking for help. You were a fighter and you battled this fight to the very end with an attitude few could hold. Courageous and strong are the words that come to mind. You are with Jesus and we shall met again. Thank you my dear friend for everything you shared.

  2. My missions mentor… We met doing God’s work and I learned so much from you my yankee friend. Few people have the dignity, dedication, endurance, and fortitude. I’m painfully sad because of the void in my life now, yet blissfully jealous because you’re so much better off than us.
    Love you Bro.. 😥

  3. I certainly hate to hear of Mike’s passing. We used to work together. Mike was a kind and gentle hearted man. We had many laughs together. Rest in Peace my friend.

  4. I have great memories of our many outdoor adventures together and with our kids. All the father-daughter canoe trips, backpacking, and our own canoe trips as well as all your help putting new shingles on my house. You never seemed to tire, baked cakes for us in the wilderness, carried the pack that had everything anyone could need, swam in the coldest rivers, and most of all, always let your love for the Lord shine! I will miss you my friend.

  5. Mike, you will be greatly missed and we had many great memories as we rode around the Hills and Meadows of our Lovely, western NC mountains. May God smile upon you as you enter his kingdom and thanks for all of the memories and love that you offered to all those around you.

  6. I always remember “Mr. Garland” with a big smile on his face. He was a up-beat and kind guy. Even though I haven’t seen him in the past 10-15 years I really remember how his voice sounds. He was always very animated and memeorable, sorry for your loss.
