Peter Dale Hillman, beloved son, brother, life partner, and uncle, passed away on April 27, 2024, in Asheville, North Carolina. He was born on July 5, 1968, in Battle Creek, Michigan, to Mary and Kenneth Hillman and was one of six siblings.
His family moved to St. Cloud, Minnesota, in 1973, where Peter began his school years. They returned to Michigan in 1979, where he graduated from Athens High School. Following high school, Peter proudly followed his two older brother’s footsteps into the United States Marine Corp. Throughout his life, he lived in many places but found his home in Asheville, North Carolina.
Thirty-one years ago, Peter met Joe Bollinger, whom he loved deeply. Together, they became known as Uncle Pete and Auntie Joe to many.
Peter loved learning and reading. He found joy in creating delicious meals for others, leading to his career as the personal chef for the Cecil family of the Biltmore Estate. Peter had a special place in his heart for the Cecil family, serving four generations.
Peter was a grown-up, silly child, and his legacy is one of kindness, warmth, and generosity that touched the lives of many. Peter's greatest desire was to be loved and accepted for who he was. His family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him will deeply feel the void left by his passing. His absence in the kitchen, where he shared his love through his culinary creations, will be felt. The kitchen will never be the same without him.
Peter was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Hillman, and brother, Mike Hillman.
He is survived by his life partner, Joe Bollinger; mother, Mary Hillman; siblings, Kenneth Hillman (Ann), Jeffrey Hillman (Chanda), Barbie Hillman (Patrick Withrow), and Nate Hillman (Kristen Ferguson); three beloved dogs, Penelope Jane, Petunia May, and Priscilla June, and many nieces, nephews, and friends who loved him dearly.
Services will be held in Asheville, North Carolina, on Wednesday, May 1, at 11:00 a.m. at The Church at Asheville, 79 Piney Mountain Drive. An additional service will be held in Battle Creek, Michigan, on Saturday, May 18, at 3:00 p.m., the location of which will be announced at a later date.
