September 4, 1928 ~ November 9, 2023

Born in: Jackson Co., NC
Resided in: Asheville, NC

June Enloe Cordell passed away November 9, 2023, at her home in Asheville. June was born in 1928 and raised in Jackson County near Cherokee. With a loving family that included her parents, Willis and Bessie Hipps Enloe, four older sisters, Norma Harris, Mamie West, Margie Nelson and Nora Hayes, and two brothers, Lenoir and Verlin Enloe, June enjoyed an active and happy childhood. She graduated from Sylva High School in 1945. She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings.

When she was only 17, June met Jack Cordell of Bryson City, who was just back from the service in World War II. Three years later they were married and remained so until Jack’s passing in 2008 after almost 60 years of marriage. After initially living in Bryson City, June and Jack moved to Asheville to start their family. They had three children, Susan Cordell Jennings (David, husband), of Lowell, NC, Terry Cordell, of Asheville, and Sharon Cordell, of Arden.

June was strong in her Christian faith and its practice including her responsibility to instill its truths in her children. She lived a life of devotion to God and actively loving all those she encountered in her life. She was active in the Asheville Wesleyan Church where she cared for younger children and babies and made pound cakes for bereaved families.

June worked for 19 years in the office at Sears in the Asheville Mall and made close, lifelong friends. June’s greatest joy, though, was from taking care of her family and home.

June is survived by her children as well as her grandchildren, Allison Jennings, Holly Jennings Lambert (Phillip, husband), David Jennings, II, and Heather June Poplai, and her great-grandchildren, Jesse Moody, Heidi June Lambert and Ellis Lambert. June will always be lovingly remembered by her family and friends as a kind, good and godly parent, wise counselor, neighbor and friend.

The visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, November 12, with a service immediately following at 2:00 p.m. at Groce Funeral Home on Tunnel Road in East Asheville. Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 13, at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Oakley neighborhood, Asheville.

Guestbook

  1. Thinking and praying for all the family. Let us look to the day of our resurrection when all things will be made new . No more pain and suffering , death defeated to be with Jesus forever.

  2. June was such a kind and loving person.  Every time we visited and met at a family function she was always cheerful and a pleasure to converse with and I am glad I had the opportunity to be part of her life. I also want to send my prayers and love to Terry who was such an excellent and loving caregiver for his mother June. Prayers and Love to the Cordell and Enloe Families.

  3. Lovely and loving, Sweet Aunt June; as she rests in peace, may her memory be for a blessing.

  4. We loved Mrs Cordell. While we attended Asheville Wesleyan Church she sat right behind us when she attended. She for sure was a saint of God. And heaven is sweeter today. Terry and family you are in our prayers.
