Born in: Portsmouth, VA
Resided in: Fairview, NC

Malcolm David Hathaway, Jr., known throughout his life as “M. D.”, transitioned from this earthly life on 7/8/23 at 80 years of age, at home surrounded by loved ones. M.D. grew up in the village of Churchland, Virginia and attended Norfolk County public schools through graduation from Churchland High School in 1961. He was awarded a football scholarship by the University of South Carolina and lettered in football there, making friends for a lifetime. He made connections with athletes from the entire Tidewater area as he enjoyed all sports and excelled in most. He was speaking with some of these lifelong friends throughout his recent illness.

M.D. worked for many years for McLean Contracting Company building bridges, piers, dry docks, interstate flyovers and the like in most of the Mid-Atlantic states, later working for Tidewater Construction Company and ending his career with Skanska USA. Many enduring family friendships were forged along the way. M. D. was the quintessential family man, always providing for his family in every possible way. Thus, the Hathaway home has always been a gathering place for our children’s friends, friends and neighbors, and family…he was a true “home body” who enjoyed being home!

M.D. was preceded in death by his parents, and a twin sister, Betty Lou Butt. He is survived by his wife, Ann Ogg, daughter, Amy Hathaway (husband, Chase Andrews), son, Malcolm D. (Dave) Hathaway, III (wife, Stephy), a sister, Marilyn Gooden Sharpe, nieces, Michelle Wilkins Knowles and Mary Beth Gooden, and the Ogg family of nieces, nephews & cousins, all dear to him.

M.D. was a “people” person who made deep connections with those he was near, be it Heart Path rehab class, sports, work, or our children’s friends. Nature and animals have always been a huge part of the Hathaway household for over 58 years of married life.

M.D. is missed by many. A Celebration of his Life will be at the Spring Mountain Community Center, 807 Old Fort Road, Fairview, NC 28730 on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 2:00, in a casual setting with a light supper to follow. It is peak leaf time in WNC, so early lodging reservations are advised. Much to celebrate, hope you can join us!

  3. Condolences to Ann and the family of M. D. He was a wonderful person and friend when we grew up together in Churchland. Ann, we would love to be at the service, but at the age of 80, is too far. We will be there in spirit . Love, Eddie and Cindy Russell.

  4. When we were in our senior year of high school M.D. was chosen to be Mr. Churchland. I was chosen to be Miss Churchland. That was a fun time together…He will always be remembered as a very special person. Always a smile on his face and most importantly his love for Ann. He will live on in the hearts of the ones who loved and admired him.

  5. We knew MD from HeathPath and always looked forward to seeing him with a smile on his face. It was evident that he loved his family by the stories he shared. He will be missed by many. Ginny and Ladd Painter

  6. Just learned of MDs passing. Heart Path will not be the same without his smiling and cheerful self. This greatly saddens my heart for he will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Ann and Mary Beth thank you for bringing him by to see us.
He has a special place in my heart.
    My deepest condolences.

  7. My deepest sympathies to MD’s family. MD was a wonderful support at Heart Path with his friendliness and his sense of humor. I always looked forward to finding out the title of the current book he brought with him and hearing about his garden. He is greatly missed and I feel fortunate to have known him.
