Virgil John Warren, 96, passed away on Friday, June 2, 2023.

A Buncombe Co. native, Virgil was a son of the late Ulus and Malissie Brown Warren. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Bette Warren; sisters, Reva Smith and Hazel Smith; and brothers, Richard and James Warren.

Virgil proudly served his country in U.S. Army during World War II. He worked as a tree trimmer in Michigan until retiring and returning to North Carolina. The perfect day for Virgil was watching NASCAR with his dog Charlie and playing cards with his family on his back porch. He was always a hard worker, he loved being independent. Virgil was always willing to lend a hand to his friends and family.

Mr. Warren is survived by his daughter, Cecilia Warren-Nault; son, Anthony Warren; grandchildren, Dylan Nault, Sydney Kurncz, Hailey Nault, Catherine Nault, Michael Nault and Jordan Nault; great-grandchildren, Caloeb Kurncz, Gemma Kurncz, Virgil Sann-Nault, and Sacha Paige; nephew, David Warren and many other family members.

Mr. Warren’s family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 7, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. The funeral service will be held the next day at Browns View Church, Candler, NC at 2:00 p.m. with Mr. Warren lying in repose beginning at 1:00 p.m. prior to the service. Pastor Ricky Netherton will officiate and burial will follow in the church cemetery. A small reception will follow in the basement afterwards.

  1. I am sorry for the loss of Virgil. I know you all have many wonderful memories of him. Praying for your comfort.

  2. Uncle Virgil was a great man. He was fun to be around. When you had a conversation with him, you had a good one. Our memories are of good times. We love you Uncle Virgil! Our thoughts and prayers to Cecilia, Jordan, Sydney, Catherine, Michael, Hailey, Dylan and families.

  4. Dave and I are so sorry for your loss! Uncle Virgil was one of the nicest men I’ve ever met! He had Southern charm that would melt any heart.
