Born in: Indianapolis, IN
Resided in: Asheville, NC

David Bruce Stout, 73, of Asheville, NC, passed away on May 24, 2023, at his home.

David was born on June 11, 1949, to William Jewell Stout and Harriet Cracraft Stout in Indianapolis, IN. He attended Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School, graduating in 1967. David went on to study at Indiana University and then earned a degree at Indiana College of Mortuary Science in 1973.

During his professional career as a mortician, David worked at funeral homes in central Indiana, and during the 1980s, he owned a funeral home in Wabash, IN. After transitioning to funeral supply and chemical sales in the early 1990s, David moved to Iowa and covered the Midwest region for Pierce Chemicals. He resided in Iowa until he retired in 2013, after which he moved to North Carolina to be closer to his children and grandchildren.

David was an avid racing fan. He especially enjoyed the IndyCar Series, Formula 1, and NASCAR, and would have been terribly upset that he passed four days before the Indy 500, which he considered an epic holiday event. Aside from racing, he had a strong interest in history; specifically, American Presidential history, with a particular proclivity for the James K. Polk, Andrew Johnson, and Abraham Lincoln administrations. He loved cooking, reading, listening to classical music, doting on his Boston Terrier, Bug, and expanding his unique art collection. He was a consummate storyteller with his friends, family, and neighbors.

David was predeceased by his father (2000) and mother (2017), in addition to his beloved beagle, Enzo (2020), whom he considered a soul mate. He is survived by his daughter, Kathryn E. Stout, of Raleigh, NC, his son, Andrew D. Stout, of Asheville, NC, and three beautiful granddaughters: Penelope Oliver, 15, Corinne Stout, 4, and Allison Stout, 2. He also has a sister, Karen Stout, who resides in Denver, CO.

Private memorial services will be held in the near future in the Midwest and Asheville.

Donations may be made in his memory to Brother Wolf Animal Rescue.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I will miss David for the good years we had. We made two beautiful, intelligent, funny, creative and successful children together and I will always be grateful for that.

  2. I feel so bad about David’s passing. He was a good friend and I always enjoyed his visits to the funeral home. We would text every so often after his move east. My sympathy to all….

  3. David was a wonderful neighbor and friend. He became like family to me and my dog Kai. I know he’s reunited with his soul dog Enzo and resting peacefully and pain free.

  4. It was always a pleasure to share time with David when he would stop at our funeral home. His wit and humor always made me laugh and forget about my daily troubles. David was a good man. I respected him for his honesty and his political humor. I will miss him and the occasional political quips and quotes that he would send. Rest in peace my friend.

  5. David and I became friends as freshmen in high school at Brebeuf Prep in 1967. We were lifetime friends, and, as such, shared much of what happened in our lives. Lifetime friendship is a rare blessing. David was a good man and I will miss him.

  6. So blessed to call you friend. You enriched my life in so many ways. You will be missed. But always in my heart.

  7. Prayers for God to wrap his arms of Love, Strength and Comfort around his family during this time of sorrow. I was blessed to have worked with David at Piece Chemicals. He and I retired the same year. I always enjoyed talking to him on Face Book. I was just wondering why he had not posted lately. I will miss talking to him.
