Carolyn Doris Smith Taylor, 97, died May 11, 2023.
Doris Smith Taylor was born March 14, 1926, in Asheville and as a small child moved with her parents to Spartanburg, SC. Doris divided her time between Spartanburg and Asheville.
Doris started her career one week after her high school graduation, June 1943 with Southern Bell of Spartanburg. When Southern Bell said move, she moved.
After 38 years of service, Doris retired as Manager of Operations at AT&T in Columbia, SC, on May 3, 1981.
Doris was a member of Grace Baptist Church and a member of The Telephone Pioneers. In 1964, Doris was given an attendance award for 13 years of having not been absent from any scheduled work.
Doris loved Bingo, playing cards, sending cards to friends, traveling and in her younger days from 1963-65 she was a member of Women’s International Bowling Congress and won a trophy. She also liked to knit.
Doris was the daughter of the late Edgar Sloan Smith and Annie Bess Frady Smith, of Spartanburg. She was also preceded in death by an infant son; a brother, Lt. Edward Allen Smith, United States Air Force; sister-in-law, Betty Turner Smith; and a niece, Susan Smith Dow.
She is survived by her great-nephew, Joshua Wood and his family of Nashville, TN; cousins, Barbara Smith Felmet and Lisa Felmet Hensley, both of Asheville; and longtime friends, Ms. Ella Rose Lee, of Spartanburg, and Carmella Shook, of Black Mountain.
Over the years Doris has appreciated the friendship of those living at Scenic Mobile Home Park.
Per her wishes, Doris will be cremated and she will be laid to rest beside her infant son and her family at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to the Shriners Children’s Hospital of Spartanburg.
The family expresses a very special thank you to the Nurses and CNAs who took care of Doris at Pisgah Manor.
A gathering of family and friends will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2023, at the Scenic Resort Clubhouse, 45 Scenic Drive, Asheville, NC 28805.
