Gary Gene Swanger, 83, passed away Monday, March 27, 2023 at his residence.

Mr. Swanger was born in Canton, NC to the late John Henry Swanger and Edith Robinson Swanger. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Joe Bob Swanger and a sister, Mitzi Swanger Rogers.

Gary graduated from Canton High School class of 1958. He retired from Dupont in Brevard and then worked another 20 years with Jim Barkley Toyota. He loved the Lord and was a longtime, faithful member of Long Shoals Baptist Church and served as a Deacon, Sunday School Director and Sunday School Teacher. He loved gardening and watching the birds outside his house.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Whitaker Swanger; two sons, Gary Gene Swanger, II and Mark C. Swanger (Stephenie); three grandchildren, Andrea N. Greer (Roman), Ashley N. Smith (Andrew) and Avery M. Swanger and a sister, Patty Green (James)

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, March 31st at Long Shoals Baptist Church in Arden with Reverend Roger Rearden officiating. Burial will follow at Roberts Memorial Park in Arden.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3:00 pm at the Church prior to the service.

  2. So many great memories growing up and then as an adult. Really enjoyed the last few years getting to catch up at boones corner and reminiscing the past as well! He will be missed and I know he was lived and respected!

  3. Gary was my next door neighbor growing up. As kids we rode our stick horses on many adventures through the woods. I spoke with him last year. Godspeed, Gary.
