Bettie Jackson Wright 90, passed peacefully away Friday, March 3rd at CarePartners Hospice surrounded by her family, singing the hymns she loved so much.
She was a very strong woman of the mountains, defying the odds again and again with her heart failure. The desire to live and will was a lot greater than the strength of the body. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Willis Wright, son Bobby Wright, parents CC and Della Jackson, siblings RC Jackson, Robert Jackson and Walter Jackson.
She is survived by Tim, Marilyn ,Marissa, Seth and Samantha Wright; Hannah, Lane and Isabelle Grant; Chris, Michael, Amanda, Fox, and Dakota Wright; Josh Mason and her sister Ann Crisp. Also several nieces and nephews that she shared a lot of love and precious memories with.
Bettie was a graduate of Candler High School-in 1950. Still a close knit group of classmates. Bettie was a leader on the girls Candler Bobcat Basketball team. She was known for her long legs and curly hair that her husband Willis enjoyed telling everyone about.
She worked for a period in DC for the FBI in the early years, but after her marriage to Willis, she stayed home and became a full time homemaker. She was an incredible cook and there is always someone talking about their favorite food she made. The pound cake, potato salad, or the best macaroni and cheese ever for Seth. She was an avid gardener and master canner. She continued canning and preserving into last fall. A few of her specialties, her grapes, grape juice, relish and jellies. She enjoyed painting ceramics, crocheting, and spending time with her grandchildren and baking with them. She loved nothing more than the dining room table surrounded by family, enjoying a good meal and catching up or grilling with the cousins who came to the mountains to visit.
Bettie spent a lifetime in Candler and active in the community and her church Hominy Baptist.
She was a member of the Ready Sunday School Class and an active member of the Audrey Roberson Circle, a group of close friends on a lifetime of mission work. She enjoyed choir and always participated in Christmas Cantatas and Easter musicals. So often, when she could not sing any longer, she would still hum along. She loved music playing throughout her home but Christmas was a special time with them always hosting the Christmas caroling party featuring her Russian Tea and peanut butter balls with a lot of love and laughter. Every room decorated with Christmas perfection.
Bettie held the position of Church Host for many years, later she continued to expand to Wednesday Night Suppers, providing wonderful meals and time to visit with friends who were like her family. The sanctuary was typically decorated seasonally from her own flower gardens. Iris, peony’s, roses and azalea were a few of her favorites.
The family will receive friends Sunday 4-6 p.m. at Hominy Baptist Church in Candler and have a covered dish meal afterwards.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the sanctuary of Hominy Baptist. Graveside rites will immediately follow in the Church Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Paul Raybon, the Rev. Melissa Hughes and the Rev. Dr. Joe Yelton will officiate. Pallbarers will be: Carl Jackson, Don Jackson, Larry McCall, Robbie Jackson, Seth Wright, Travis Bass.
Memorial donations may be made to the Hominy Baptist Church Kitchen Fund, 135 Candler School Road, Candler, NC 28715.
