Martha Angelyn Vickery Hutchison (Angie/Grandmommy) went to be with her Savior on the morning of the Lord’s Day, January 22, 2023, at the age of seventy-eight. She is survived by her sister, Faye Connor; brother, Jimmy Vickery; daughter, Ashley Hutchison Hyland and son-in-law Stephen; grandchildren: Zachary, Rosie, and Scarlett; daughter, Elizabeth Anne Jensen and son-in-law, Daniel Jensen; and grandchildren: Brooke, Andrew, and Hannah Jensen. She is preceded in death by her husband of nearly fifty years, Raeford Williams Hutchsion Jr. (Bill/Hutch).
Angie was born to her parents, Marion Brantley Vickery and Marian Elizabeth Nix Vickery, on August 15, 1944. The right side of Angie’s body was permanently weakened after she survived polio at the age of two. Raised in Charleston, SC, Angie graduated from James Island High School, where she was not only a student but called on as a substitute teacher. After attending The Citadel for summer classes and the College of Charleston during freshman year, she graduated from Winthrop University with a bachelor’s degree in education. She married her best friend and partner for life, Bill, on May 21, 1966. Angie lived in Charlotte, NC for most of her married life. She taught kindergarten and lower elementary school for thirty-four years, taking an eight-year break to raise her two daughters, Ashley and Anne. Never idle, she provided for her family by sewing, nannying, and picking up creative odd jobs in addition to teaching. In 2012, Angie and Bill moved from Charlotte, NC to the mountains of Fletcher, NC. Bill passed away from leukemia on February 13, 2015, but that did not stop Mrs. Angie! She considered her home a gift and used it as such– she gladly hosted “Merry Widows” gatherings, various women’s groups from church, tea parties, Bible studies, and movie marathons, sometimes when she was not even present for the occasion. For the last year of her life, she lived at Thrive Retirement Home, where she became the President of the Residents Association. She blessed the staff and residents with generosity, advice (wanted and unwanted ;), and crafts such as cardmaking and embroidery.
Although affected by many physical complications throughout her life, Angie was full of vigor, enthusiasm, and passion. She fervently loved and trusted the Lord, and her faith was evident through her gentle evangelism and consistent prayers for her loved ones. She greatly loved and valued every child she encountered, from her students to her children and grandchildren, to the children in her church family. Through the time she dedicated to patiently inquiring and listening, others received what her granddaughter affectionately labeled “Grandmommy therapy.” Angie was a loyal wife, mother, and grandmother, a talented seamstress and craft maker, a lover of the Blue Ridge Parkway and birds, an avid reader and movie-watcher, a tea enthusiast, and a giver of any gift that came to her mind. Her gracious hospitality is remembered by everyone who walked through her door. She is now celebrating with her Savior!
Angie’s celebration of life will be held at Arden Presbyterian Church on February 5, 2023, at 1:30 p.m. It will also be live-streamed at ardenpres.org. In lieu of flowers, monetary donations may be sent to Arden Presbyterian Church. Angie’s family is so thankful for the abundant support given by their covenant family and community.

Such a sweet and caring person. Praying for the family.
We praise God for her life well lived and for all of the precious Grandmommy therapy.
Angie was a precious friend and encourager. I was blessed by her gift of hospitality (always cloth napkins! ) and her love for our Lord and church family.
Most sincere condolences to family on the loss of sweet Angi. May the Peace of Christ be with you all. Sending love and hugs.
Dear Anne and family! Sending love and prayers to you and the family! I did not know your mom personally but her love for God friends and family was a beautiful tribute.
Sending love!
