Sandra (Watson) Stroupe Payne, 84, of Asheville, died Monday, October 17, 2022 at Care Partners Hospice.

Born in Buncombe County, she was the wife of Carmon “Dean” Payne of Asheville, and the daughter of the late Fred Dewey and Agnes Mae (Kent) Watson. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Donald Thomas Stroupe; two brothers: Ray Heatherley and Terry Watson; and one sister, Jo Mussey.

Of the Baptist faith, Sandra loved her animals-the dogs, cats and wild turkeys. She also enjoyed gardening, especially her flowers.

In addition to her husband of 19 years, she is survived by two daughters: Rebecca “Becky” Stroupe Granger (Kevin) of Pineville, NC, and Carman Payne Griffin (Mark) of Asheville; one granddaughter, Mackenzie Hitt; two step-grandsons: Ryan and Christopher Granger; one step-granddaughter, Amy Ingle White; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, October 23, 2022 at Groce Funeral Home on Tunnel Road. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Garden of Memories. Friends will be received at the funeral home two hours prior to the service, from 12 PM until 2 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Care Partners Hospice, 21 Belvedere Rd., Asheville, NC 28803.
