December 14, 1942 ~ May 21, 2021

Born in: Asheville, NC
Resided in: Horse Shoe, NC

Jerry Lloyd Dyer of Horse Shoe has completed his journey here and has gone to his heavenly home.

There to greet him were his parents, Lloyd and Rebecca Ray Dyer; his brother, Thomas; and beloved daughters Roseanne Koppelman and Bethany Welsh Harper; and his brother-in-law, Jim Reemes.

Jerry was born December 14, 1942. He grew up in Woodfin and was a member of Elk Mountain Baptist Church. He graduated from Erwin High School and attended Mars Hill College until the finances ran out and decided to let his “Uncle Sam” pay for the rest of his education when he joined the USAF. The training he received in the Air Force resulted in his working for NSA for 26 years. His time with NSA gave him the opportunity to travel to a number of places in the US and Europe, and two tours in Australia. He received his BA from University of MD and his MLA from Johns Hopkins University. Prior to returning home, he resided in Catonsville, MD. After his retirement, he and Terri returned home to live in Horse Shoe.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 54 years, Terri Trexler Dyer; his sister Debbie Reemes- Ford and her husband Carlos; granddaughters Morgann Dyer, Taylor and Payton Welsh; and Amber Koppelman; his niece Amanda (Jon) and their three sons Donovan, Jayson, and Jimmie; and nephew Jacob (Jenny). He also leaves behind seven great-grandchildren with one due in November: Michael Balash, Adaya and Brayden Finley, Landon and Violet Edney and Marisol and Evelyn Castro; brother-in-law Dennis Trexler; sister-in-law Peggy T. Ray (David); sister-in-law Rhonda Dyer (Tom); a number of cousins including special cousins Maxine and Hubert Dyer; and his best friend Larry Richmond of Catonsville, MD.

Many thanks go to Debbie Reemes- Ford and Carlos for being my sitter on the weekends which allowed me to continue to work and always my backup; to the staff at Four Seasons Palliative Care for assistance in the last two years; and to all the hospice workers and staff at Elizabeth House who made his last days bearable.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 26, 2021 at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian with Pastor Richard Merck officiating. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service. Burial will be private. PLEASE WEAR BRIGHT COLORS.

  7. I will always remember that smile & quiet way these last year’s as Terry chatted with everyone Jerry would be right there usually with his baseball cap. Rest in peace Jerry 🙏

  8. My wife, Judy Huntley and Terri are first cousins. Many years ago I needed to use a desk top computer to perform some continuing education projects after hours in my work in risk management and claims adjusting. This was when home computers were just starting to be available. I did not have one yet. Jerry and Terri did. They always had an “open door” policy for me and graciously offered the use of their computer so I would not have to go to a community college at night and hope I could get the use of one without waiting in line. I never forgot this kindness. The lessons I completed on their computer furthered my career and culminated in receiving a professional designation which included an all expense paid trip to Seattle for Judy and me. Thank you Jerry and Terri for all you did to help me further my career at a very important time in my life. To Terri, my deepest sympathy in Jerry’s passing. There is no more confusion now. My Mom had the same long journey as your dear Jerry. I can relate in so many ways.

  9. Terri, Debbie, Amanda,

May Jerry’s soul be at peace with our Heavenly Father. I pray for peace and comfort for you and your loved ones at this difficult time and offer my condolences to you all. Jerry was such a gentle soul he will always be in our hearts. “It takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, and a day to love them, but it takes an entire lifetime to forget them.” I just found out this today. It breaks my heart. I pray for peace and comfort for you and your loved ones at this difficult time and offer my condolences to you all.
