Ellen Penley

ellen penley

April 22, 1935 ~ April 26, 2021

Born in: Buncombe County, NC
Resided in: Skyland, NC

Ellen Penley, 86, of Skyland, died Monday, April 26, 2021 at her residence.

A native of Buncombe County, she was a daughter of the late John and Lena Rogers Roberts. Ellen was also preceded in death by a son, David E. Penley as well as her husband, Eugene Penley.

Ellen was a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend. She was retired from the Gerber baby food plant. She had a contagious smile and a great sense of humor.

She loved sewing, reading and gardening and was known to be able to root or revive just about any plant. She was a wonderful cook and passed along that passion to her daughters. Her true joy was having the entire family gathered in the kitchen and around the table while she prepared a big meal. Ellen enjoyed listening to music and especially going to blue grass festivals and was an avid fan of the shindig on the green.

She also loved “spur of the moment” family road trips and was always ready for the next adventure. Some of our most treasured memories will be our “all day Sunday picnics” which was our summer time tradition.

Ellen will be missed by so many, but her spirit will forever be a part of everyone who knew and loved her.

She is survived by two daughters, Carrie Pressley of Brevard and Marian Penley of Asheville; one daughter-in-law, Darlene Penley of Easley, SC; three grandchildren, Chris Rollins (Kim), Beverly Rollins Hoxit (Daniel) and Shannon Penley Lewis (Tommy); five great-grandchildren, Haley, Chance, Noah, Nicholas and Cody as well as one great-great granddaughter, Ruby.

A Graveside Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, April 30, 2021 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Candler.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I’m so sorry for your loss. Your mother will be missed by all. I came to see her on her birthday last year. I enjoyed the visit. God will enjoy Ellen’s smile.

  2. Family, your in out thoughts and prayers. May God give you comfort during this time. Sammy Morgan

  3. This morning I was thinking about my childhood back when my Dad was the pastor of the Church of the Nazarene in Arden, NC. I remembered the pot luck dinners when I was 5 years old in 1985, and that triggered a vivid memory of a beautiful cake, completely round like a ball, meticulously decorated as a globe with light aqua frosting and the continents beautifully and precisely iced to form our world. “What was that lady’s name who made that”, I thought. I remembered her with dark brown hair and glasses, and a beautiful, cheery spirit. She would pick my mother and me up for church sometimes when my Dad had to be there way earlier…in what my 4-5 year old memory was a light green car with velvety light green seats. We would drive under a stone bridge arch to get to church from her house…an arch I identify with her to this day. “Ellen Penley!” That was her name. I remembered. When I saw this lovely tribute to her, and her picture here, a flood of memories came back, and I knew this was the lady who had an impact on my life all those years ago. Mrs. Penley. A face I would never forget. A lovely woman, whose kindness, creativity, and smile made an impression on my little heart and mind, that I remember 40 something years later. Even though that was many years ago, and my Dad moved into another calling in 1986 from the church of my most formative years, and I never saw Mrs. Penley again, I wanted to leave my tribute to her here for her family, and to let you know that her love and kindness reached a little girl whose heart she touched, and will forever be part of the fabric of my life. Rest in peace, Mrs. Penley, thank you for your kindness, and I can’t wait to taste your wonderful cakes and see your smile in heaven again one day! With sincere gratitude, Jessica Hilkert
