Alfred E. Hughes, 89, passed away Sunday, January 17, 2021, at the CarePartners Solace Center.

Mr. Hughes was born August 30, 1931, in Asheville to the late Clifford and Mary Alma Price Hughes. He was a 1949 graduate of Sand Hill High School and served in the US Navy during the Korean War. He graduated from the NRI (National Radio Institute) in Washington, DC, Asheville-Biltmore College (now UNC-A) and Cecil’s Business College.

Al retired after many years of service with Kimberly Clark at the Berkeley Mills plant in Hendersonville.

He is survived by his wife of over 63 years, Thelma Fisher Hughes; son, John Allan Hughes of Georgia; daughter Teresa Hughes Pennington of Asheville, four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a sister-in-law, Barbara Ann Hughes.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert (Bob) Hughes and wife Anne Hughes, brother Dr. Carl C. Hughes, sister Ruth Hughes Farmer and husband Jim Farmer, and grandson Joseph A. Urquhart.

Alfred was always active with his children’s lives, volunteering with the East Asheville Youth League, Little League Baseball and East Asheville Bowling League. He served as secretary of the NC Bowling Association and he was active at his church, Beverly Hills Baptist where he taught Sunday school for several years.

He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and by all who knew him.

Alfred will be buried at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery following a graveside service with military honors at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 29, 2021. The Rev. Dr. Billy King will officiate.

A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date at Beverly Hills Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials maybe made to Beverly Hills Baptist Church, 777 Tunnel Road, Asheville, NC 28805.
