Craig Robert Mosley

June 22, 1958 ~ August 19, 2020
Born in:
Cincinnati, OH
Resided in:
Asheville, NC
Craig Robert Mosley passed away peacefully on August 19, 2020, after a brief, heroic battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of 62. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He was born on June 22, 1958, in Cincinnati, Ohio, a son of the late Lamar and Leonore Mosley. He always considered Cincinnati home, even after living and raising a family for 22 years (and 22 winters) in Midland, Michigan.
Craig is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Carol and their wonderful children, Colleen Mosley (Ube Urban), Cara Mosley (Matt Giovanetti), and Cameron Mosley. He also had one adored grandson, Grey Mosley Urban, who affectionately called him “P-chop”, instead of “G-pop” and five siblings: Susan Osterhues (Rick), Kevin Mosley (Sara Nelson), Matthew Mosley (Audrey), Nora Beaulieu (David), and Paul Mosley (Angie). He is also arguably the favorite uncle of his thirty nieces and nephews.
Craig graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in 1979 with a degree in Finance. He worked for his entire 32-year career at the Dow Chemical Company. After retiring at age 52, Craig and Carol moved to Asheville to enjoy a milder climate and to allow Craig to pursue his newfound love of cycling. He was actively involved in the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club, serving as President and as a ride leader for several years. Craig was also very involved at his church, Skyland United Methodist, serving on several committees and always available to lend a helping hand.
A private memorial service for the family will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 22 in the Chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian. For those who wish to view the service, it will be streamed live on Groce Funeral Home’s Facebook page. Once there, look for the “videos” tab, which will lead you to the Live stream. We are so sorry for your loss. Craig’s passing leaves a very big void in our community as he was loved by so many.
Craig was a great inspiration and help, in my early formidable days as a cyclist, looking for direction and advice. He will be missed on BRBC group rides
Please accept my sincere condolences to the Mosley family during this time of grief. I had the pleasure to know and work with Craig during our time at Dow.
I am sorry for this loss of your husband, father, friend. Craig was a great leader, compassionate, kind, and fun. He is missed.
Craig, you will be greatly missed. Your legacy will definitely live on as we ride with “no angry pedal strokes!”. Thank you for welcoming me into the Asheville cycling community, and inspiring me to get my n+1 bike and to be a better cyclist! 💙 🚲
What a sad day! Riding on the Blue Ridge Parkway will never be the same.
Missing you already my friend and my brother. Will never forget our time and the rides and trips we shared.
Your example of a life of service will always be an inspiration to our church family, Skyland United Methodist.
I rode with Craig a few times on some rides he led. A memory I will always have was when I was lagging a bit up a hill and Craig came up from behind, where he had been checking on other riders, and he put his hand on my back and gave me a little nudge to assist and encourage. Very sorry to lose Craig. Best wishes to his family.
My deepest sympathy to Craig’s family. Simply a gem of a person. Besides riding with Craig, I spent several years marking roads for the then Fletcher Flyer. May his memory be for a blessing.
I am so very proud to have known Craig and worked with him during my career. He was always thoughtful and giving. Sincere condolences to his family.
To the Mosley family, as former Midlanders that have also retired to the Asheville area, we are so sorry to hear of Craig’s passing. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. If you need anything at all, please feel free to ask. (Colleen and Justine went to school together).
Craig will be missed by BRBC and the cycling community and I will miss his words of encouragement on the group rides. I am so sorry for your loss.

To the Mosley family, Craig was a delight to get to know on one of his many organized rides, this one in Oregon. I was ready to join him on other trips that he had in the works. Our condolences to you and your family on Craig’s passing. He will be sorely missed and not replaced.
I am grateful to have known Craig, grateful for the experiences we had together on and off our bicycles, and grateful for all the times he willingly helped me along. His passing is a devastating loss but we certainly have an incredible number of happy memories of him and a whole lot of shared joy. My sincere condolences to the Mosley family and to all of Craig’s friends.
I am so sorry for your loss. Craig is such a wonderful organizer and leader in our community. He is greatly missed.
Carol we were so sad to hear of Craig’s passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and the family.
Carol, Colleen, Cara, Cameron our deepest sympathy to you as Craig’s journey with us has ended too soon. All the family is beyond saddened at how quickly this disease attacked such a vibrant & athletic individual. It is so different to comprehend how life can change so drastically before our eyes. May our Lord comfort and bless each with peace as you confront your loss. Know Craig is with Nana & Papa in heavenly bliss. We love each of you & will be with you in spirit at the memorial service. Prayers to see all of you soon. Love Bob & Betty Dilworth
Craig was a real gentleman cyclist and he will be missed. I thought of him today as I struggled up some climbs he would have made look easy.
He was a show off like that! I once beat him in ping pong and was celebrating this lifetime achievement only for him to reveal that he played me left handed! Makes me laugh thinking about it. Nora (Mosley) Craig’s sister
My deepest condolences to all the Mosley family on the passing of my cousin, Craig. So many great childhood memories of spending Holidays (mostly Thanksgiving) with Craig and the rest of the Mosley’s. Craig is truly a great person and will be badly missed. RIP, Craig.
Love, Kevin and Laura McAlonen
I was stunned and saddened upon learning of Craig’s passing. I am, however, completely unsurprised at the earlier entries in this Guestbook because they describe my own experiences with him on Blue Ridge Bicycle Club rides. I live in Raleigh but have kept a membership in the BRBC in no small part because of Craig’s thoughtfulness, generosity, kindness, wisdom, good cheer and inspiring capacity and capability on a bicycle. I only had a few rides with him, but I thought of him every time I pondered another trip to Asheville to ride my bike. His rides were the ones I was looking forward to.
I’m very sorry for the loss of your treasured family member, and I’ll be holding a good thought for you and him when I pedal up those torturous hills he made look so easy.
What a great guy! So sorry for this loss. My sincere sympathies go out to his family.
I am so so sorry. Mr Mo was such a great friend. We shared so many memories when the kids were little. House boating in Lake Cumberland, skiing in Breckinridge, Kings island, visits to Asheville and Naples, bike rides. I’m just heartbroken for someone in my generation. Vibrant and healthy to be taken so damn early. Love to all the Mosley’s.
All you need to know about Craig is that he had a million friends.
We visited Craig & Carol a month before he passed and even though he was feeling week, he insisted on teaching Mark and I how to play a card game him and Carol loved to play called Casino. We think of him every time we play now.
Was so nice to hear him talk about Carol and call her “his bride”. So endearing.
My sincere condolances to Carol, the kids and all his siblings. Sandy & Mark
My prayers are with Craig’s family. I had the joy of working with Craig at Dow just before he retired, and visited him just a few years ago in Asheville to catch up. Craig was a caring leader with a great sense of humor and compassion for everyone around him. I am sorry for you loss.
So lovely to read about Craig’s loving family. I hope your wonderful memories of him will bring you comfort. During my time working and riding with Craig he was a stand out. Kind, gentle, smart, strong. He will be missed.
I also would have never gotten together with my life partner, Tammy, if it wasn’t for Craig – and for that I am eternally grateful.
It was a privilege to have known Craig, and it is one I shall cherish. He set us an example to live up to, and it won’t be easy.
Dear Carol and family, we are so sorry to hear the news about Craig. We are thinking of you at this difficult time and sending you strength to get through. Take care. Gina and Steve Doktycz
The biking community has lost a good leader and all ’round nice guy. Craig was always ready and willing to help out on rides making sure folks were going the right way and helping them catch up. Fond memories.
Colleen & Family,
We are so sorry for the loss of your father. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.
Thinking of you,
Your Children’s Family
Craig will be fondly remembered, and missed. I was fortunate in coming to know and ride with him during the short time we shared as BRBC members, and co-leaders on a few rides. He was a strong and steady rider, always considerate of the needs and safety of others. A generous man, who freely gave of his time and expertise as President of the Club for several years. Pedal on, kind soul!
So sorry for this loss to all of us. I didn’t know Craig well but but appreciated his contributions to the Bike Club and certainly enjoyed the contacts I had with him through bike club events. Future events will not be quite the same without his cheery presence.
I will miss Craig a lot. He was a good friend and a wonderful cycling partner. True to Craig’s character he often spent more time on a ride helping other riders than actually riding. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.
My family and I express our sincere condolences to the Mosley family. I was fortunate to be one of Craig’s many Dow colleagues who benefited from his kindness, wisdom, intellect and his willingness to mentor and help others. His caring nature extended well beyond the office. Craig set a wonderful example for all of us. Such a great guy. So very sorry for your loss. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.
I have only known Craig for a couple of years through the BRBC. He was warm, welcoming and generous. We shared common ground as former Michiganders and our mutual dislike for Michigan winters. He gave me hints about how to become a better cyclist. He was an excellent leader and human being by any standard. Hard to understand why he was taken so early – I can only guess that God needed a ride leader. I hope that his family can find comfort is what surely must be a treasure trove of excellent memories and that they can feel the arms of all those who loved him embracing them. May God bless you.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Phil and Robin Shope
Please to know Craig and appreciate all of his help with everything related to SUMC and the Scouts.
Condolences to the family.
Carol and family so sorry to read in the paper today about Craig’s passing. Know that you all our in our thoughts and prayers. Craig was an asset to our neighborhood and served it well. God’s comfort and peace.
I will remember Craig for his servant’s heart and how he lived fully with a friendly smile for everyone he encountered. At Skyland UMC he served diligently in various ministries and positions. Yet he also quietly performed many tasks such as walking on the roof searching out leaks, cleaning up after CHOW, and removing kudzu. I admire the way he loved his “bride” and children. He was consistently kind and kept a positive outlook. The way he fully lived has left an impression on me. Live fully now.
I have imagined Craig’s transition from earth as servant to being joyfully welcomed by all the heavenly hosts who are God’s servants. I pray the Lord will bless Craig’s family and those who walked with him as each adjusts to the loss of such a good man.
I’m devastated. I was just getting to know Craig, and I really enjoyed my brief time with him. Funny, smart, humble, resourceful, willing to serve, … he was a true role model, and the world is worse off without him.
I’m so sorry to he about Craig’s passing. He will certainly be missed a SUMC. Prayers to Carol and family.
Dear Carol,
I’m so sorry this has happened and so fast. I’ve gotten to speak with you more than I did with Craig, but I know he took his duties at church very seriously.
I’m praying for you and your family, that you are all surrounded by so much love and warmth, trusting in God’s plans for you.
Blessings,
Lorena Hastings
Carol, Colleen, Cara, and Cameron; we are so sorry for your loss, we feel with you, he will be missed.
I’m glad I got to know Craig, and I always enjoyed talking with him at our weekly Euchre games. He always had wonderful stories to tell about his biking adventures, or something to share about his children. He seemed to have a very calm and positive outlook on life, which was sincere and refreshing. I will miss him.
We are so sorry for your loss of such a dynamic person that was Craig. He was such a caring leader for the BRBC and we will miss his fun loving guidance for the club. I was an honor to be a member of the BRBC board with him. We hope your memories will eventually comfort you in this loss.
Carol, Colleen, Cara, and Cameron – and the rest of Craig’s beautiful, big, loving family….We are very sorry for this tragic loss. I just watched the video tribute – so good, and so heartbreaking. All those pictures of babies sleeping in his arms are so sweet! It was an honor to have known Craig. He was always so positive, light-spirited, and steady, hard-working and kind. Your friends and church family are grieving alongside you all. But remember, you are never alone – God is with you.
I consider myself one of the lucky ones to have had the pleasure to work with Craig and join him for many rides and cycling trips over the years. It is hard to believe that such a kind, thoughtful, generous, bright and joyful individual is no longer among us, but I take solace in the fact that he will be forever with us through the countless wonderful memories and stories that so many of us share, thanks to Craig. My heartfelt condolences to Carol, family and all of Craig’s friends.
Craig led a full and wonderful life and he is gone too soon. We will miss him around the euchre table more than words can express.
Carol, Colleen, Cara and Cameron,
We are so sorry for the loss of your husband / father. Our hearts are with you today as you celebrate his life and his love.

Craig was a good man. Kari & I knew Craig through Skyland United Methodist Church where we have been blessed by the presence of the Mosley family. He always lived according to the principles and values taught by Christ, with kindness and understanding for all. It is a difficult time dealing with Craig’s death at such an early age. May his family feel God’s presence as a comforting grace during this time of such sadness and grief. Our prayers remain with Carol, Colleen, Cara, Cameron, and family.
I will really miss my friend Craig. He was such a wonderful, Godly man who loved his family and Skyland UMC. We served in the trustee committee together and while I was the chairperson, Craig was my right hand man. He was always there to help with any project that needed to be done, including the budget, which isn’t my strong point at all! He was always there every Sunday, in the same chair, on the end of the row closest to the isle, about 3 rows back. He greeted everyone and always made it a point to talk to my children like they were important. They felt that and they, like all of us, will miss him so much. There will be a huge hole in our church family with his absence. What a comfort to know that we will all meet again in heaven one day! Bless you Carol and your sweet children. We pray for peace and comfort for you. We’re here for whatever you all need. All of our love is sent to you all today.
I have been where you are so if you ever need someone to talk to please call. Jan Whiteman. 828-699-0472
Carole and family our most sincere and deepest sympathy during this time.
I was part of Craig’s Michigan Diaspora group, even though I left Michigan 20 years before I met Craig. Craig welcomed me on cycling adventures in the Blue Ridge Mountains, across the US and around the world. He brought us together by planning, in extreme detail, so many wonderful journeys. As the slowest in the group (captain of the turtles) Craig was always waiting for me on the summit with words of encouragement and a kind smile. We shared so many good times on and off the bike. I miss him very much.
Sending thoughts of strength, sympathy and love from afar.
Elizabeth
Carol… we are saddened to hear the news of Craig’s passing. Although we did not know him well (mainly from sitting behind you two in church), Craig was always friendly and dedicated to helping others and giving of himself. May the difficult times you are experiencing eventually be filled with loving memories of a life well lived.

very saddened to hear this terrible news of Craig’s passing.
I really enjoyed working with Craig over various years in different roles. Have enjoyed some rounds of golf with Craig as well as an occasional bike ride on the railtrail in Midland.
The family is in our prayers and thoughts.
Carol, Colleen, Cara and Cameron- I’m so sorry for your loss. Craig was one of the most amazing people I’ve known. As all the stories here reflect, he was always quick to make someone feel welcome or check to make sure everyone was okay. His kindness, compassion and unique humor will be missed by so many.
Such sad news to hear of Craig’s passing. We have such good memories of Craig and the “KI” crowd. Waterskiing with Craig and others on “yellow boat” in Lake Cumberland the the lakes around Cincinnati remains some of the best summer memories of those years. One boating day stands out: Mark W, Craig, and I boated up the Ohio to visit a friend who lived? camped? up river. On our way back, a major storm blew in just as we entered the locks. Craig’s little boat was pretty small for such an adventure. We put the up canopy and I reached out to try to keep the windshield clear. As the doors of the downstream locks opened to the storm, it felt like something out of Exodus. I think we all were scared, but Craig was cool as a cucumber. Needless to say, we made it back to dock successfully, but that might have been the sign it was time for a bigger boat. I also remember playing many many hands of Euchre with Craig. No one could ever prove he was slight of hand, but whenever he dealed, he always seemed to get a loaner. To this day, whenever someone deals themselves a loaner, I think of Craig and wonder….how did it do it?
Gary recalls Craig joining the Wild Bill’s golf outing in northern Michigan a few times. And wasn’t Craig the one who got so frustrated with a drive that he tossed the tee marker into the woods??
I am so sorry for your loss, Carol. Even though we haven’t seen you guys for many years, you and your family have a fond place in our hearts. Looks like Craig touched the lives of many people in Midland, Asheville, and beyond. My heart breaks for you losing him so unexpectedly. Craig’s life is a reminder that every day is a gift. May his memory, and God’s loving embrace support you and your family as you move forward in life. Love, Christy
I just heard about Craig’s passing from a Midland FB group that is planning a ride in honor of Craig. I had the honor of working with Craig at Dow. I remember him the same as described in all these notes – kind, smart, cool as a cucumber no matter how bad the earnings news might be, and always with a smile. I can still picture his CRM signature on a workpaper and knowing I could count on it to me right! I just started biking in the past few years but it sounds like it would’ve been great fun to join one of his trips.
Carol and family you are in my thoughts and I hope you can find some comfort in knowing all the lives Craig touched in a positive way.
