David Buchanan, 62, went home to be at peace in the presence of our Lord on August 11, 2019.

David was a native of Mitchell County and son of the late Howard and Ruby Buchanan. He retired after more than 40 years in the banking field, most recently with Fidelity Bank in Atlanta, Georgia.

He is survived by his wife Susan, his son Jared and wife, Julie, his daughter Brittany, and siblings, Annette Duncan and husband Jerry, Gayle Buchanan and husband Jim, Judy Snyder and Mike Buchanan. He is also survived by his grandchildren Elizabeth, Elya, and Evan.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Friday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue in Asheville, with funeral services following with Pastor Dennis Thurman officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

  15. I am truly sad to hear this news. My heart goes out to David’s family. We both worked at GMAC and I had the pleasure to work for David at AmSouth and Fidelity. He was a real genius with indirect lending and led the way with selling loans and monetizing every aspect of the business. It was his genius that allowed Fidelity to keep the doors open as they failed at most other lines of businesses. I had the opportunity to speak with David a few months ago after the merger was announced. He seemed to be looking forward to his next chapter in life. I am proud to have called him a friend and will miss him. RIP my friend.

  16. We are so very sorry to hear of David’s passing. Tommy has many memories of David growing up in high school. We so enjoyed the visits he made to our dealership, just to stop by and say Hi. He many times offered support to us during our past business years with compassion, a trait that will be missed by the large banking industry. He was truly a gentlemen with a kind spirit, gone to soon. May you and your family find peace and solitude in the coming days knowing that you will see David again.

  20. I worked for David the past 15 years. His depth of knowledge & memory regularly impressed me. He once told me when he didn’t want to watch what was on the family TV as a kid, he would read encyclopedias instead. He knew what seemed like every small town in the Southeast! His knowledge of the indirect automotive business was no doubt one of the best. He will be missed. Your family is in our prayers.

    I cannot process the news Jared called me with yesterday. It is impossible to understand and our hearts break for you. My last conversation with David was similar to the ones we have had over the course of our 36 year friendship. He was trying to find spots for several of his displaced coworkers, we talked about kids, GMAC days and getting older. I had know indication at all he was even remotely troubled.
    He was a great friend, a brilliant mind and a tremendous worker.
    I will miss him terribly.

  38. David and I have been friends for years. We met at GMAC and went through some supervisor training courses together in Detroit many years ago. We both moved on to other banks and led indirect lending operations. We spoke almost monthly to share success stories and challenges. David was a fantastic leader and a brilliant business man.   40. David hired me at Amsouth in 1994, it was the best year and a half that I had in indirect lending. He was so easy to talk to and had such a great sense of humor. I always enjoyed going with him on dealer calls and the lunches at Granny Macs on Phillips Highway. A true gentleman and a great mind for banking, he will be missed by many that had the opportunity to cross paths with him

    Where do we even start. We are so very sorry for your loss and our hearts ache with yours. David was such a huge presence in all our lives. When we were together with David, we knew there was going to be laughter, kidding, and stories. David was a great man who was very thoughtful, giving, and loving. Lowell has fond memories that go all the way back to elementary school. David became his best friend and that friendship continued on. We have shared fun times, trips, and visits along the way.   50. I pray his family finds comfort in one another during these hard times. David was someone who emanated positive feelings. I sat around the corner from him at Fidelity Bank. Every time I saw him, he would smile and say Good Morning, followed by holding the door and letting others go before him. He was one of a kind. May his soul rest peacefully.
