Charles Calvin Hoffman

Asheville – Capt. Charles Calvin Hoffman (U.S. Navy Ret.), of the Deerfield Community, died Thursday, February 24, 2005. A native of Claremore, Okla., he was the son of the late Mead Everett and Ellen Humphrey Hoffman and husband for 61 years of the late Doreen B. Hoffman, who died in 2002. Capt. Hoffman received his B.S. degree from Northeastern State Teachers College in Tallequah, Okla., his M.S. from California Polytechnic Institute, Calif., and his post-graduate work at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Capt. Hoffman taught in a one-room school house, the same one he had attended, in Claremore, Okla. He served as a Naval aviator in the Pacific during World War II and retired from the Navy after more than 20 years of service. He was associated with the Lockheed-Georgia Company, Nuclear Research Division, in the Atlanta area, with extensive travel to Central and South America. He was associated with the Nuclear Assurance Corporation in Atlanta. He taught math and science at May River Academy, Bluffton, S.C., and at The Heiskell School, Atlanta, Ga. He also worked for H&R Block in Hendersonville, N.C., as a tax preparer. He was a member of St. Giles Chapel Episcopal Church at Deerfield, was a former vestry member of St. James Episcopal church in Hendersonville and a member of the Hendersonville Civitan Club. He was an avid, lifelong gardener with a Master Gardner Certification. Capt. Hoffman was also a member of the Cherokee Nation. He is survived by two daughters, Linda Hoff, and her husband Norman, of Herndon, Va., and Paula Byrd, and her husband Ralph, of Powdersville, S.C.; a son, Lt. Roy Hoffman, Chaplain, and his wife the Rev. Robyn Hoffman, of Virginia Beach, Va.; five grandchildren, Kevan Hoff and Andrew Hoff of New York, N.Y., Ellen Byrd of Hollywood, Calif., Laura Byrd of Columbia, S.C., and Ruby Hoffman of Virginia Beach, Va. and a brother, Paul Hoffman of Claremore, Okla., and a special friend, Marlene Taylor of Asheville. Capt. Hoffman was preceded in death by three sisters and five brothers. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am Monday in St. Giles Chapel to be conducted by the Rev. Morgan Gardner. The family will receive friends following the service. Interment will be in Calvary Episcopal churchyard next to his wife. Memorials may be made to Deerfield Residency Fund or your favorite charity.
