Hendersonville - The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord. Job 1:21. We as a family are grieving the loss of our precious Jeffrey Richard Smith, 49, who was born on November 4, 1969 in Chicago, Illinois to his loving parents Richard Dale Smith and Alice Fay Mills Smith. A follower of Jesus....Jeff was called home to his real and forever home on Monday November 12, 2018 surrounded by immediate family and cradled in the arms of his wife Cyndi who shared a love relationship they each considered to be a most rare and precious gift.
Jeff was a beloved UPS delivery man and he also leaves an entire mountain community of dear and much loved customers in the Northern end of Mitchell County to include Bakersville.
Jeff leaves behind this side of heaven many family whom he loved deeply; his parents, Richard and Alice Smith of Fairview; children, Dylan Nelson of Leicester, Jerrica Alize Smith of the home, Jacob Smith of Greeley, Co, Silas Smith of Leicester and two step-children, William Leavell, IV “Moses” of Texas and Miriam Leavell of the home who is affectingly known as “Mindy”; a sister, Alissa Franks and her husband, Jeff; two nephews, Trevor and Chase Franks; a dear cousin/brother, Rick Rodriguez; mother and father-in-law, Richard and Carol Ackner; sister-in-law, Vikki Conner and her children, Grace and Abi and a brother-in-law, Reade Ackner and his wife, Mollie and their children, Owen and Aaron.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at Stoney Mountain Baptist Church in Hendersonville from 1:30 until 3:00pm.
The funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM at the church with Pastor Thomas Holbrooks officiating. Burial will follow at Cane Creek Cemetery in Fairview.
He was such a kind guy with a wonderful personality. He will be greatly missed. I will never forget the time he tried to race us in the UPS truck in Glenn Ayre! Such a funny memory.
Jeff was such a wonderful person. He always had a big smile on his face and a kind word. He always made time in his busy day to stop and connect with the people on his route. He was a great example of how we should treat each other. He was so beloved here in Mitchell County. Everyone knew him and everyone loved him. I will always think of him when I see a UPS truck. Cyndi you and all the family are being lifted up in prayer by your many friends in Bakersville/Mitchell County. May God comfort you in your time of great loss. Godspeed Jeff ❤
OMG! I have known him most of his life…a wonderful, sweet guy. A next door neighbor, UPS driver, stone mason, and a friend. Richie and Alice, I do not know what to say, I am in shock…I know your hearts are also broken. We send our love from Vero Beach, FL, where are spending the Winter in our 2nd home.

He was a friend to our family he always was interested in the cars my husband an son were working on with all the parts he delivered to them he will be missed in Mitchell county. I knew Jeff from the clinic when I worked there, and he has delivered packages at my home. HE was a sweet person and always asked about everyone in my family. I.am so sorry for your lost. may the LORD be your comfort in this sad time.
He will be missed. He always had time to talk with us and always asked about David. He was just so genuine and caring with his customers. God Bless You Jeff. You are in God’s hands now and he had other plans for you. Sympathy goes out to you and your Family. God Speed. Bonnie and David Perkins
We are so sad to learn about Jeff. Although we are part time residents of Bakersville, and Florida we like so many, were blessed to have known this amazing guy. We will cherish our chats about faith, family, friends, and politics. It was easy to remember his Nov 4th birthday for we celebrate our anniversary on that day. The last time we spoke Jeff beamed when talking about his recent marriage to Cyndi. He said he now has the kind of marriage his parents and David and I share. While UPS’ slogan may have been ‘We deliver’ Jeff delivered not only packages but kindness, caring, friendship, and the brightest smile! Heaven now has the brightest of stars and we will never forgot the great guy in the big brown truck
A shock, indeed to learn of Jeff’s death. ‘Our Jeff?!’? Tall, dark, black hair!? It was, alas. My heart is sore, I very much enjoyed our conversations and the time you loosened a nut I couldn’t get loose on my mower deck. So sorry for your family and new wife. Very good juju to your soul and your family..
It is so hard to believe that each day you will not be coming through the door with a big smile and chatting for a bit. Always speaking of his children he loved so much and all of his family. You were always so kind and helped us all so much. Such a blessing to have had such a dear friend. You have been a part of our community and making a difference in our lives for a very long time. Such an impact you had on everyone here. We will surely miss you every day. Prayers for your family during this time. Until we meet again….
Cyndi and family, I am so sorry for your loss. Jeff will truly be missed by this mountain community where he was known and loved by all. I pray God will give you strength and comfort in the days ahead.
Jeff was dear to our family- he didn’t just bring us packages. He brought a smile, some good laughs, great conversation, and a listening ear. We are so sad to hear of his passing and hope that Cyndi and his family can find peace in this difficult time. We’ll miss him.
Such a wonderful person and a joy to see when he delivered to Penland and Bakersville. Especially also thinking of Cyndi, Love to you and all the family.
Cyndi,
I’m very sorry for your loss. I’m at a loss for words beyond that.
Sending so much love. Our hearts are broken for you all.
Mitchell County Health Department was blessed to be able to work with Jeff. We considered him a true friend who always had a big smile on his face and was such joy to be around. He always took that extra time to talk with us and always asked us about our families. He was a kind and caring person. We will miss him greatly as everyone here are heartbroken over this loss. So glad to know he accepted the Lord and that one day, we will be able to see him again. To his family, may the Lord comfort you all in this time of loss.
To Cyndi and all the family we send our condolences and prayers. We will miss
the always friendly and considerate man who was such a good friend.
Dear Cyndi, Richard, Alice and the extended Smith Family, None of us here in our mountain community quite know how to process this loss. Jeff was one of the kindest souls we have ever known. He always had a cheerful word, a smile, he asked about the kids, our health….he watched us make our glass, he commented on our garden, he told us stories about his family, and he let our dog jump up in the cab with him….(because, Han knew, there was often a cookie there…and if not a cookie, there was a good friend.) We send you our deepest sympathies, our love and our prayers.
To his precious wife Cindi that Jeff told Greg an I about, the marriage he had searched for many years an finally found. This is so sad considering he just found true happiness in a marriage. To his kids that he was proud of an spoke about often as he was holding my grand daughter Piper from the time she was a baby up until now at 5 years old. He always took the time to ask how everyone in the family was an even my friend he delivered packages to that passed away this time last year. My heart is broke as my family will not be seeing his beautiful smile, generous heart an his love for this whole community. He loved it over here as he called it an how it was so peaceful but my what a peaceful time he is having now with our Lord an Saviour now. He always spoke of how the Lord had been good to him so there is no doubt he is with him now. Jeff you have left such an impact on so many lives an a whole community mourning your loss. There will never be another UPS man that could replace you as you had a great of gold, not only delivering packages but a smile an a kind word, but most of all a loving heart. You truly loved your customers as you would say because if we didn’t order then you would have nothing to deliver. Today our community is gloomy, sad an so broken but lifting your family up in prayer as we can’t imagine thier pain as much as we are hurting they truly are so we are praying extra hard for them for God to wrap his loving arms around them an give them peace an comfort that only he can. Until we meet again my precious friend!!

My heart aches for each of you! He will be so missed by me and many others. He was such an awesome gentleman. Always smiling and grateful to everyone he came in contact. I just started working with UPS for the holiday season, after retiring from USPS last December, because he suggested I could come help him this year. I am so sadden that I will not get to be his driver helper. I was so looking foward to helping him out. His memory will alway be with me.
Many prayers for peace and comfort to Cyndi and all the family. However, our loss is Heaven’s gain!

Jeff was one of those rare men that always had a smile and a friendly word whenever you saw him. Even in the holiday rush!
We’re all better for having known him. He will be missed.
You can no longer see me, but please know that I am there
I am the flowers in the garden, I am the wind beneath your hair
The memories that I left behind, shall forever be with you
As for me I am in heaven now, where my life will start anew
No longer do I suffer
No longer do I feel pain
I’m at peace watching you from heaven now
Until we meet again
When you walk through the gates of Heaven
I will take you by the hand
And lead you to my eternal garden
Where we will shall never part again!

My thoughts and prayers go out to all of Jeff’s family and friends. I work at United Community Bank in Bakersville and he was our delivery guy and friend for several years. No matter how busy he was he always had a smile. I honestly don’t think I ever saw him not in a good mood. I know that couldn’t be easy with the job he had but that’s just the kind of guy he was. We miss him every day but have the hope of seeing his sweet smile again one day. God Bless you all.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
I am so sorry, I didn’t learn of Jeff’s passing until March 6th when a UPS coworker told me. I was so shocked I had to quickly sit down. He also told me Jeff had accepted Jesus, I am so overjoyed that he did. Jeff delivered medical supplies monthly to my house near Bakersville for years and we were friends. I always enjoyed seeing and talking with him, he liked my mountain ‘spring water: to help him cool off.
Jeff truly loved his children and family, and I was glad he found love with Cyndi. While I am heartbroken I won’t see his great smile and feel his firm handshake until I reach The Kingdom of Heaven, I was blessed to have known him.
To all of his family and loved ones, I offer belated prayers that The Lord will continue to comfort you as only He can. God bless all of you, I share your grief and sadness.
