Resided in: Asheville, North Carolina

Elva Lena DeBruhl Farlow, 93, of Asheville, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 12, 2018, at Aston Park Health Care Center, surrounded by her children. Elva loved her family and friends, and we in turn loved her immensely, and celebrate the person she was and the life she led. A native of Asheville, she was a daughter of the late John Robert DeBruhl and Lena Eskew Swanger DeBruhl, and was their last surviving child of nine children. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Earl Farlow in 1987, and by her beloved son, Robert, in 1998. Elva sought and achieved perfection in all she did. She excelled in gardening and raising flowers and succeeded in rescuing and nurturing to fruition the smallest and weakest plant in her garden. Without fanfare, her cakes, pies, and casseroles were flawless! By way of her talents she spread “friendship” and God’s love. Many a smile was brought to a grandchild or friend’s face as a result of the sharing of a delectable dish or a beautiful flower by Elva. Elva is survived by her daughter, Renee’ (Paul) Peninger of Fairview, and by two sons, Micheal, of Asheville, and David (Betty) of Asheville, and by their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was affectionately known as “Mayo” by her youngest grandchildren, Daniel and Kayla Peninger, with whom she always had a close, special bond. A private graveside service was held Thursday, February 15, at Dix Creek Chapel Cemetery, presided over by Revs. Gwen and Wade Hall. Groce Funeral Home, Lake Julian, assisted the family. Memorials can be made to the Employee Appreciation Fund c/o Aston Park Health Care Center, 380 Brevard Road, Asheville, NC 28806. Elva came to this earth on St. Patrick’s Day, and those who knew her considered themselves “lucky” and blessed to have been a part of her life. God allowed her to pass from this abode two days before Valentine’s Day after 93 years of sharing unselfish “love” and being dearly “loved" by all.
