Resided in:
Asheville, NC
Ione Wright Morgan, age 103 of Asheville, N.C. passed away on November 11, 2017 at the Care Partners Solace Center in Asheville, NC. She was born in Kings Mountain, NC. on June 7, 1914, the daughter of Joel Wesley Wright and Pearl Carpenter Wright.
Ione is survived by her son, Charles Wesley Morgan, Jr. and his wife, Linda and her daughter, Barbara Morgan Nesbitt, five grandsons, David (Heather), Edward (Natalie), Andrew (Rebecca), Michael (Erica), and Neal (Anna); her cherished great-grandchildren, Abbey, Caroline, Jake, Gracie, Reid, William, and Suzanne.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Charles Wesley Morgan, her parents; three brothers, Wayne Everett Wright, Lewis Calvin Wright, and Joel Wesley Wright, Jr. and son-in-Law, Charles Edward Nesbitt.
A strong elegant woman-everything she has done in life has been out of love and grace. “Mama” as she is lovingly called by her family, had stamina and a love of reminiscing about her early life even at the end. Ione still lived in her home up to her 103rd Birthday.
She met her future husband, Charles Morgan, at Asheville High School (Lee Edwards High). He was the coach of the football team. She and Charles both began careers in education, Charles as a teacher and coach and Ione as a typing and business education teacher. She was a graduate of the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina.
Ione enjoyed a rich history filled with philanthropy, adventures, and achievements. She was President of the Junior League for two years and was the oldest member of that organization at her death. She was also an Associate Member of the Children’s Welfare League and the Biltmore Forest Country Club.
Ione has been a Board member of many organizations and volunteered and supported the Asheville Orthopedic Hospital, Girl Scouts, United Fund, PTAs, Vetust Study Club and their antiques sale. A member of Central United Methodist Church, she was always involved in activities of young people at the church plus serving as WSCS Secretary of Youth Work.
A “Celebration of Life” service will be held on December 2, at 2:00 P.M. at Central United Methodist Church in Asheville with the Rev. Dr. Rob Blackburn officiating. Internment will take place at Calvary Episcopal Church Cemetery next to her husband Charles, following the service. The family will receive friends and family on Friday, December 1, from 6-9 P.M. at Groce Funeral Home at 72 Long Shoals, Arden, N.C, 28704.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church, UNC-G, and Brevard College, Joel W. Wright Scholarship Fund.
Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian is assisting the family and the memorial register is available at grocefuneralhome.com.
