Dr. Howard Bennett Marble, Jr. 94, passed away September 1, 2017 at Heather Glen Assisted Living in Arden.
Howard was born on June 14, 1923 in Shelburne Falls, MA. to the late Howard and Lucille (Smith) Marble. He graduated from Hopedale High School as class valedictorian in 1941 and continued his education at Brown University, graduating in 1944. After obtaining his D.D.S. from Tufts University in 1947, he became an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon and served 23 years in the U.S. Navy. Howard served on the U.S.S. Yosemite, a destroyer tender during the Cuban Missile Crisis while stationed in Newport, RI. He was stationed at Beaufort Naval Hospital in SC, Camp Lejeune Naval Hospital, NC, and Bethesda Medical Center, MD. He retired in 1969 as a Captain. His medical career continued in Augusta, GA; he became head of the Veterans Hospital Dental Department and he served as professor at the Medical college of Georgia. Following retirement in 1988, Howard and his wife Carol resided in Melbourne, Fl and Arden, NC.
In addition to his parents, Howard was also predeceased by his siblings, Robert and Virginia (Lindquist) Marble; Barbara (Sisson) Marble, the mother of his children; and Carol (Yates) Marble.
Survivors include five children: Robert Theodore Marble of Lewes, DE; Cynthia M. Burrell of Gainesville, GA; Judith M. Nollner of Lilburn, GA; Thomas Howard Marble of Appling, GA; Stephen Paul Marble of Sandy, UT. In addition, he is survived by 12 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
Howard will be remembered as a loving and generous father and grandfather, a teacher, a surgeon, and an avid sportsman. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, and skiing well into his 80’s. He was an active member of the Forest Hills Golf Association in the ‘70s and ‘80s and later shot his age playing with his three sons.
Interment will take place at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
