Beatrice Bertie White Smith, 88, of 103 Busbee Mountain Road, Asheville, died Sunday, August 18, 2002, at the Hospice Solace Center. Mrs. Smith was born in Samson, Alabama, and was a daughter of the late William E. and Mercedes Grace White. She was married to Fredrick A. Smith, Sr., who died in 1984, and was a 53-year member of the Lake Wells, FL., Order of Eastern Star Chapter 107. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Reynolds Volunteer Fire Department and was a member of the Biltmore Church of Christ. She is survived by three daughters, Marguerite Smith of Warwick, Queensland, Australia, and Hazel Smith Hensley and Elizabeth Onevia Smith, both of Asheville; one son, Fredrick A. Smith of Asheville; sixteen grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Revs. Joe Hensley and Steve Hensley officiating. Burial will be at Green Hills Cemetery. Her family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and requests that memorials be made to Mountain Area Hospice Solace Center, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28803.
