Joe Paul Eblen, age 87, prominent Western North Carolina philanthropist and community leader, passed away peacefully at home on May 11, 2013. He is best known for his service to Eblen Charities, his career as a successful businessman with Biltmore Oil Company/Eblen Short Stop Stores, and his early work as a coach and teacher, exemplifying his lifelong commitment to athletics, education, and refereeing.
Born to Myra and Fred Eblen on June 2, 1925 in Roane County, Tennessee, he was the fifth child in a family of five sisters and one brother. Joe felt fortunate to grow up on the Eblen farm, where during the Depression everybody pitched in to the best of their ability and learned to take care of family and community. From first through eighth grade, he studied in a one-room school house and later graduated as a star athlete and scholar from Kingston High School. During WWII, he served in the U.S. Navy, attending aviation candidate school and officer' training at Emory, Columbia, and Princeton. As a GI Bill student after the war, he received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Tennessee and his Masters of Education from Vanderbilt.
In 1946, Joe married and settled in Asheville, the hometown of his bride, Roberta Simmons Eblen, and he began teaching at Hall Fletcher. He received many honors in his life, and he enjoyed none more than the title "coach," still used by many who knew him best in that capacity. He was a mentor and role model for young people as well as a valued colleague. He began assisting his father-in-law, Paul Simmons, at Biltmore Oil Company, and then left teaching to head the business after Mr. Simmons passed.
The Eblen family deeply appreciated Joe's many honors from local, state, and regional organizations. He was widely recognized for achievements in community service and athletics. In addition to extensive work with Eblen Charities, he served on the boards of RiverLink, the Salvation Army, Asheville Community Theater, and many others. Among recent awards were Asheville Living Treasures, the North Carolina Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the Mythical Realm of Rhododendron Royal Brigade of Guards, and induction into the WNC Sports Hall of Fame, and the North Carolina Athletic Association Hall of Fame. He was especially pleased by the naming of the Joe P. Eblen Intermediate School.
He is survived by Roberta (Bobbie), his wife of 67 years, daughters, Dr. Anna Eblen and husband Rick Popish, Margie Eblen, son, Rock Eblen with partner Kristalyn Bunyan, and daughter Jennie Eblen and husband Rick Perkins; seven grandchildren: Mario Popish and partner Mia Edidin, Amanda Barnard and husband Chad, Dr. James Perkins, Jewel Tavener and husband Matt, Maggie Perkins, Sam Goff and husband Steven, and Patrick Perkins; seven great grandchildren: Laela Edidin, Evan, Max and Juliet Barnard, Emma Goff, Evie and Owen Tavener, as well as sisters Francis Roberts, June Murray, and Betty Westmoreland.

Coach was our greatest role model. He and Coach Knockow never forgot a play or player always encouraging with that gentle grin. Joe did so much for everyone. When Joe asked no
one could refuse. That empty seat at
the Tennessee Stadium will be impossible to fill. Godspeed Joe

heaven for you.
God speed Joe. The world is a lesser place without you. Your legacy will live on forever.

To The Eblen Family:
I liked the way that Joe lived his life and the way he mentored so many of us along the way. As you know, the Lasher Family and Joe go way back and in all the years we maintained a great relationship. Personally, I feel very fortunate to have counted on him as a personal friend in spite of our differnce in ages. We did so much together over the years that I can’t begin to appreciate what it meant to me in an email. So,my thoughts and prayers are with you all. I am glad that we were able to plan for this. I am glad that I was able to participate in so many ‘Joe’ activities. I am glad that he and I could be friends and business partners. Most of all, I am glad I got to know him and all that he stood for. What a special man and lifetime of achievements!
To the Eblen Family –
Joe was humble, caring, always cordial and friendly, and a totally selfless person. His legacy will live on for generations, and the people his life inluenced will be forever greatfull that he was such an important person in our community. He was a good and kind person. I was honored to have known him!
Joe was a referee when I played basketball at Reynolds back in the mid 1960s. He was always fair and a credit to the sport. He did so much more than just sports. Joe gave much more than he received. We have lost a great community leader and human being. Thanks Joe. You will be greatly missed.
Thanks Eblen family for sharing Coach with the Waddell family for the past sixty years. He has been such a big part of our life. It is going to be a long time for me to realize that he is not standing by the phone or we are not going to lunch with the gang. Thanks for always being there for so many folks that needed your help. Coach loved his family so much, as he did everyone he ever met. The prayers of so many go out to the Eblen family on this special day as Coach goes to his Heavenly home! Thanks for our special journey Coach! Bill and Mary Dot and all our family
To the Eblen Family:
It is difficult to put into words what Coach Eblen mean’t to so many people. I remember when he coached the ‘Mighty Mites’ at David Millard and Hall Fletcher. So many of us were young back then and we admired Joe’s ability to lead young people. He was my friend and I shall miss him very much. He will be sorely missed.
May God give you all the peace that only He can give in times like these.
Rest in peace Coach.

Several years ago I was president of the Asheville chapter of the University of Tennessee Alumni Association. What an honor it was to get to know Joe. I got to spend time with him on several bus trips to Knoxville and I will always remember those times. He was an exceptional person and his memory will live on. GO VOLS!!!
My deepest sympathies go out to the family for the loss that not only they, but also this community, has suffered. What an incredible man and what an amazing legacy that he will leave behind. Coach, you will not be forgotten or will your impact on the community. I take great comfort in knowing that the incredible staff at Eblen Charities will carry the torch. You made a difference! I can only aspire to do things the way you did. We will miss you, my friend. Safe travels.
Dear Family,
I am honored to have known Mr. Eblen over the past few years while living in Asheville. I will always appreciate his generousity and willingness to bring me to my first UT football game. What a special memory! His legacy will truly live on. – Jon Clemmons
Joe Eblen was an angel to so many people in need over so many years. His life was dedicated to helping others.
Our deepest condolences to the entire Eblen family. He will be terribly missed by you and by so many others.
He has earned the gift of eternal life promised by God through his Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Lynn, Margie, Jenny & Rocky: How lucky we were to have had Mike, Lee, Bobbie & Joe for parents. We truly were raised in a Norman Rockwell painting. How did they ever find babysitters that would take on all six of us? Please give your mom a hug from Michael and me. You’re all in my thoughts and prayers.
Joe Eblen has helped so many thousands of people during his lifetime, and given them a better quality of life. He was such an incredible man and will be forever remembered as one of Gods Angels on Earth – and an Angel in Eternity. Thank you Joe Eblen. You will be missed.
Jenny, Margie and Family. So sorry for your loss. Your Dad was a champ. GOD BLESS.
