Vernie Martha Owens Wyatt, 84, of Sandy River Rd., Leicester, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 11, 2012. A native of Buncombe Co., she was a daughter of the late Coy and Netter Ledbetter King. She was also preceded in death by husbands Lonzo Owens and Charles Wyatt; daughter Kay Owens; granddaughter Donna Peek Sams; sisters Vever Gregg and Gladys Nash; and brothers Curtis, Millard, Bill, and Lewis King. Mrs. Wyatt worked as a seamstress for Kellwood Manufacturing. She was a member of South Turkey Creek Baptist Church. She is survived by daughters Martha Ledford, Wilma Cagle, Melba Peek and her husband, Don, Mae Sams and her husband, Jerry, and Vickie Owens; sons Allen Owens and James Cecil Owens and his wife, Maxine; 6 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 2 step-great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; 1 step great-great grandchild; 1 future granddaughter-in-law; sisters Venie Roberts and Viola Tweed; and brother Gordon King. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday at South Turkey Creek Baptist Church, with Steve Rogers, Matthew Peek, and Melvin Teague officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Her family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday at Groce Funeral Home, Patton Ave.

    I’m really sorry to hear of your mother’s passing. She was certainly a very sweet and patient lady who always had a pleasant smile on her face no matter what the circumstances may be. She will definitely be missed by many.

  5. I was so saddened to hear about your Mothers passing. We have always enjoyed coming to South Turkey Creek Babtist Church to sing, and seeing Mrs. Wyatt sit and seem to enjoy our singing.
