Mary Eloise Maynard Sampson passed away on March 20 at Heather Glen in Arden. She was 91 years old. Mary was born on May 16, 1920, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She grew up in Ann Arbor and graduated from the University of Michigan. Mary was married for 69 years to Paul Sampson of Arden. Her dear brother, Dr. Wallace Maynard, predeceased her. Paul and Mary raised their children in Michigan, and then lived in New England for several years before moving south. They have five children: Carolyn (Charles) Hubbard of Metamora, MI; Cynthia Sampson of Arden; Claudia (Douglas) Sherry of Biltmore Lake; Daniel Sampson of Prescott Valley; AZ; and Gwendolyn (Fred) Natusch of Hyannis, MA. They have seven grandchildren: Nevin (Cynthia) Hubbard of Lake Orion, MI; Mollie (Andrew) Lammers of Asheville; Katrina (Fernando) Ferreyra of San Rafael, CA; Monica (Michael) DiPilato of Raleigh; Fred Jr. (Jen) Natusch, Adam Natusch, and Carrie (Bryan) Cimeno, all of Martha's Vineyard, MA. Mary had 17 great-grandchildren. In recent years, Mary's greatest joy was to be with her great-grandchildren. She spent her life dedicated to giving her family a warm, loving, and welcoming home. The Sampsons often opened their hearts to others, including exchange students and young professionals. Many of Mary's fondest memories centered around their years living in the mountains of New Hampshire. Their home was filled with family, young grandchildren, and visitors. Mary was a lifelong Christian Scientist and an active church member. The family will hold a private memorial service. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mary may be given to Carolina Day School, 1345 Hendersonville Road, Asheville, NC 28803. Mary's family has many connections to this school. Her daughter Claudia and granddaughter Mollie and husband Andy work there; her granddaughters Katrina and Monica are alumni, and three of her great-grandchildren are students in Carolina Day's Lower School. Mary's family is deeply grateful to the staff of Heather Glen Assisted Living at Ardenwoods Retirement Community for their compassionate care of Mary during the past year and their loving support of her family.

Guestbook

  1. I will miss Grammy for her great kindness, her pure heart, and her selfless spirit. My heart and condolences go out to the family. May God’s love and light shine upon you.

  2. My Mother had a Doctorate in ‘Welcome Homology’ From scratch to your stomack to the afternoon nap from too much good food! She would not only think of everything you needed she followed through to a full 360, as kids you don’t think of those things or appreciate them but I tell ya, I miss those days and I can’t tell you how I wish I had been more mature and gratefull, AT THE TIME! Once the damage is done, you’re done to a degree permanently, don’t say it!!! ….it’s true.
There are so many ways that I have become who she wanted me to be and saw so little of who I AM, and have become, I Love you Mom…

  3. I will miss Mary´s quiet demenour, and will also remember her strong determination which allowed her to raise a very nice family. My fondest memory is when I grilled a few steaks during a Christmas gathering, filling her kitchen with smoke (for the delight of other hungry men in the family who wanted to complement a menu of salads and desserts). She had a long life and a loving family, and went in her own terms. I´ll especially miss playing music for her and her friends while watching her warm smile.

  4. I have such wonderful memories of Mary to treasure for a very long time. As beautifully said, ‘The Sampsons often opened their hearts to others….’

A practioner shared with me this poem when my mom passed on.
Just around the corner a little out of sight your loved ones walk ahead of you into Eternal Light.
Just around the corner they see a brighter view and many of their loved ones at last can see them too.
Although your work is not finished here you know God hears your prayer that someday around the corner you’ll find them standing there.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

    With much Love,
    Denise

  5. My love goes out to all of the Sampsons and especially my BFF, Carolyn. It has been wonderful through the years to connect with ‘Mom’ through you all. She was and still is an exceptional woman. A nurturer, great cook, wife, mom and Grandma. Much love to her as she travels on her way.

  6. Grammy Sampson, a woman who could connect with misguided children in an unexpected magical way. she touched my life and connected to me when I was a young child in need. she was so kind hearted and always attentive and encouraging. we shared a special bond, while bird watching. her excitement and enthusiasm had me hooked. she showed me the hidden wisdom of the feathered world. I always remember her helping ALL those misguided children who had NO family of their own. She gave her time and attention to them and shared her passion for life! I will have only great memories of her. although we were not close in ther last couple decades, the impression she gave to me as a child will last a lifetime. I am so glad to be touched by her. She wore the name ‘Mary’ with honor. LOVE!!

  7. Dear hearts, How blessed it is to be touched by Mary Sampson’s hand! Godspeed to this magnificent woman who always cared, always loved.

    With gratitude, Susan

  8. Mrs Sampson will be missed by all that knew her, she was a very sweet lady… My sympathy to the family in this time of loss..
